Utica Mayor-Elect names Latina to his Transition Team!

A new day is dawning in Utica, NY as Mayor-Elect Robert Palmieri takes on his initial duties. Those named to his Transition Team include several close associates who I have had the pleasure of working with on local agency boards. I can honestly say these colleagues have a true heart for our community, congratulations!

Of special note is the naming of C. Sonia Martinez to the endeavor, to my knowledge she is the first Latina ever named to such a prestigious position. Sonia and I go back several years when we partnered to form the Mohawk Valley Latino Association based here in Utica, NY. Buena Suerte Hermana Sonia!

TechnoLogic Partcipates in Rescue Mission of Utica Fund Raiser and Comes Up a Winner!

Oneida County Legislator Ed Welsh, R-Utica, and his wife, Roma, serve Louisiana chicken and sausage gumbo to Technologic Solutions President, Tony Colon during the 19th annual Gourmet Guys to the Rescue event Sunday, Oct. 30, 2011, at Hart's Hill Inn in Whitesboro. The event benefits the Rescue Mission of Utica.

Technologic Solutions President Tony Colon served at the table for the local Boy Scouts of the Revolutionary Trails Council along with Bill Garrett, Council Chief Executive and Rollen Miner, Local District Executive. Ray Halbritter Delivers Closing Remarks at Latino Upstate Summit

Ray Halbritter, Oneida Nation Representative and CEO of Nation Enterprises, gave the closing address at the 2011 Latino Upstate Summit, held on Oct. 21 at Mohawk Valley Community College in Utica. The purpose of the conclave was to address the role of people of Latino descent in this country as it relates to community life, the economy and civic affairs. Speaking about the summit, Halbritter said “The Oneida people have a special understanding of the challenges faced by the Latino community in New York, and we have a unique appreciation for all the obstacles they have overcome to get to where they are today.” . . UTICA — It’s just after 9 a.m. on a Wednesday morning and court interpreter Anthony Colón heads to his familiar spot inside the Oneida County Courthouse: a corner intentionally situated close to the court attendant.

“The court attendant really runs the show,” he says.
Preparing to check in with each attendant on opposite sides of the courthouse, Colón offers a nod and a smile toward a Spanish speaker he has interpreted for in the past and will interpret for again later that morning. She smiles brightly and in Spanish says: “I’m glad to see you here.”

Minutes later, the attendant calls for Colón: “She can’t fill out the form,” the official says pointing a clipboard toward 19-year-old Zuleika Lozada, formerly of Puerto Rico, who speaks limited English. Lozada moved to Utica 10 months ago with her daughter and boyfriend.

Colón quietly reads the form in Spanish to Lozada, who didn’t expect to have an interpreter today. In fact, she didn’t know what to expect at all and is relieved to know Colón will interpret during her Family Court proceedings, she says in Spanish.  Read full article
