25th SOMOS Latino Conference -- An Outstanding Success

Pin It Now!

Assemblyman Felix W. Ortiz, Chairman of the Assembly / Senate Puerto Rican and Hispanic Task Force announced the 2012 SOMOS EL FUTURO Spring Conference an overwhelming success.

Held each spring in Albany, this year’s workshops ranged from economic development, diversity, education, healthcare, foreclosure prevention, Hispanic political empowerment, veterans and a statewide Housing conference.

Sonia Martinez, chairwoman of the Mohawk Valley Latino Association, and Anthony Colon, president of Techno-Logic Solutions, were presented with awards at the Somos El Futuro 25th Anniversary Conference in Albany.

Somos El Futuro is a nonprofit public policy advocacy group that's name means "We are the future." More than 5,000 people attended this year's three-day conference, according to a news release. Speakers included Gov. Andrew Cuomo; Sens. Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, both D-NY; and state Office of General Services Commissioner RoAnn Destito.

With the participation of over 100 experts from throughout the country, the workshops provided insider insight and data, paving the way to much needed improvements. Experts included members of President Barack Obama’s administration, Assembly and Senate members, and consul generals from 10 Hispanic countries, New York State commissioners, and New York State Supreme Court justices, CEOs from numerous Hispanic organizations, chancellors, medical doctors, Immigration advocates, research scientists, and representatives of New York’s Executive Chamber.

The SOMOS Organization was extremely honored by the participation of roughly 10,000 people during the weekend long conference. The 25th Annual gala hosted over 1,000 people, who were privileged to witness Governor Andrew Cuomo’s nomination of Assemblyman Peter M. Rivera as the new Commissioner of the Department of Labor. Governor Cuomo’s choice of venue for this important announcement brings great pride to, not just the leaders of the SOMOS Organization, but also to the Hispanic community as a whole.

The accomplishments of the 2012 SOMOS EL FUTURO Spring Conference are intensified by the ability to aid Hispanic youths in furthering their education and work experience through apprenticeships and internships. The SOMOS organization is, both grateful and, proud to announce that with the funds raised in this event, it will be sponsoring 20 college graduates to enter an 8 week long Apprentice Program and 20 college students to enter an 8 week long Internship Program

With overwhelming joy at this triumph, Assemblyman Felix W. Ortiz, the Puerto Rican and Hispanic Task Force and the SOMOS Board and Executive members look forward to an equally magnificent Fall Conference, which will take place in San Juan, Puerto Rico on the weekend of November 8th – 11th, 2012..............(MORE INFO ON SOMOS)
