The March 31st annual meeting of the Mohawk Valley Latino Association was attended by nearly 100 members of the community. Many in attendance were complimentary of the various bi-lingual presentations given including the Keynote Address given by Ms. Ladan Alomar, Executive Director of the Centro Civico Organization of Albany and Amsterdam, NY.

Major sponsors of the event included Adirondack Bank, Excellus Blue Cross Blue Shield, Price Chopper, Americu Credit Union, and Mohawk Valley Community College Latino Student Union.

Kids Coloring Contest
The event included children's activities with prizes awarded in a coloring contest; a cooking demonstration, and a performance by the Association's youth dance troupe, Ritmo Caribeño. A total of 10 new members were registered during the event.

NY GOVERNOR'S SMALL BUSINESS SUPPORT TEAM IN UTICA APRIL 3RD

The April 3rd workshop is designed to help Small Business Owners start and/or expand their business.  Representatives from the Department of State, Empire State Development, Department of Taxation and Finance, Workers Compensation Board, Department of Labor and the State Liquor Authority will be giving presentations. There will also be a Question & Answer session with each agency representative after the main presentations. This is an amazing opportunity for small businesses to address questions or concerns directly addressed by representatives from these agencies.

The Small Business Workshop's admission is open to the public and will take place at the State Office Building located at 207 Genesee Street, 1st Floor Utica, NY. and scheduled to begin at 6:30 PM. 

Please confirm your plans on attending via email to: smallbusinessRSVP@exec.ny.gov  by April 2 and be sure to include your name, title and organization in the e-mail.  Also, please remember to bring a photo ID to be permitted entrance into the State Office Building.

UPSTATE NEW YORK HISPANIC LEADERS HONORED BY STATE ASSEMBLY FOR THEIR COMMITMENT AND DEDICATION TO THE LATINO COMMUNITY

Albany New York, March 25, 2012 — In recognition of SOMOS EL FUTURO's 25th Anniversary Mohawk Valley New York Community Hispanic leaders, C. Sonia Martinez and Anthony Colon were officially acknowledged for their work in the Upstate New York Region at the SOMOS EL FUTURO Conference held March 23-25 in Albany, New York. This year’s 3 day event drew more than five thousand attendees regarding topics of interest to NYS residents with a focus on the issues and policy making subjects affecting the Hispanic/Latino Community. Noted speakers and presenters at this year’s event included Gov. Andrew Cuomo, Sen. Chuck Schumer, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, NY Secretary of State Cesar Perales, NYS OGS Commissioner RoAnn Destito, and other key bi-partisan representatives from Federal, State and Local levels.

Assemblyman Felix Ortiz (D-51), Chairman of the SOMOS EL FUTURO Organization and the New York State Assembly’s Puerto Rican & Hispanic Task Force stated, “Tony Colon and Sonia Martinez are playing an important role in the Upstate New York Region by effectively serving their community and especially in reaching those often marginalized in difficult economic times.” Ladan Alomar, Executive Director of the Centro Civico of Amsterdam, NY nominated Ms. Martinez and Mr. Colon for the NYS Assembly Citation “for their tireless work in the Central New York Latino Community and all of the Upstate Region”.

Ms. C. Sonia Martinez is Chairwoman of the Mohawk Valley Latino Association, Inc., (MVLA). Sonia along with Mr. Colon founded the group in 2003 to unite the Hispanic/Latino community and secure access to essential services. The primary goal of the MVLA is to be a source of information and assistance to all members of the community it serves. Ms. Martinez has been employed for over 20 years by Health Insurance carrier Excellus Blue Cross-Blue Shield which is a great supporter of the MVLA and Hispanic/Latino causes throughout Upstate New York.

Mr. Anthony Colon is President of Techno-Logic Solutions, Inc. (www.solutionsbytechnologic.com) a New York State Certified Minority Business Enterprise that provides services in various disciplines including language, cultural competence, human services, and human resource recruitment. Tony speaks several foreign languages and is a Legal and Medical Spanish Interpreter.
