A Growing Need for Fourt Interpreters In Area - full article

UTICA — It’s just after 9 a.m. on a Wednesday morning and court interpreter Anthony Colón heads to his familiar spot inside the Oneida County Courthouse: a corner intentionally situated close to the court attendant.
“The court attendant really runs the show,” he says.
Preparing to check in with each attendant on opposite sides of the courthouse, Colón offers a nod and a smile toward a Spanish speaker he has interpreted for in the past and will interpret for again later that morning. She smiles brightly and in Spanish says: “I’m glad to see you here.”
Minutes later, the attendant calls for Colón: “She can’t fill out the form,” the official says pointing a clipboard toward 19-year-old Zuleika Lozada, formerly of Puerto Rico, who speaks limited English. Lozada moved to Utica 10 months ago with her daughter and boyfriend.
